ART smart
Ainsa III
By Bernie Petit
The concept of a universal language is embodied in Ainsa III, a 12.5-foot-tall sculpture located in the
UNC Charlotte Center City plaza adjacent to First Ward Park.
Created by world-renowned, Barcelona-based artist Jaume Plensa, the public work of art is made
of die-cut stainless steel letters from nine different cultural alphabets used around the world. Each
letter, selected for its aesthetic beauty, was hand-assembled to form the silhouette of a seated figure
in continuous flow.
The sculpture was commissioned by Queen's Table, a group of anonymous donors who celebrate
Charlotte by funding public art projects to enhance the quality of life in the city.
