Thicket
By Bernie Petit
Inspired by the history of blacksmithing, "Thicket" took its place in September 2015 on the terrace at the
Mint Museum Uptown at Levine Center for the Arts. The 7.5-foot square block, created by New Mexico-based
sculptor Tom Joyce, is composed of stainless steel rods passing through cast iron hammer heads.
The artwork includes pieces from Joyce's previous projects, including steel from the World Trade Center. He
was commissioned by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to forge letters for the phrase, "No
day shall erase you from the memory of time."
"Thicket" is the fnal piece of Project Ten Ten Ten, a series of innovative works commissioned in honor of the
Mint Museum Uptown's opening in October 2010.
