PHOTO COURTESY OF ROBINSON - SPANGLER CAROLINA ROOM – CHARLOT TE MECKLENBURG LIBRARY S T O N E W A L L H O T E L The Stonewall Hotel (and adjacent annex) was one of Charlotte's most prestigious hotels in the early 20th century. Completed in 1907, the hotel was situated at 535 W. Trade St. and operated until 1958. Named for the widow of General Stonewall Jackson, who lived in a home on the property before the hotel was built, the Stonewall consisted of 125 rooms and 75 private baths, a luxury for that time. It was also set up next to the Southern Rail Road Depot, making it convenient for travelers. Thanks to nearby trolley tracks, guests could easily use public transit to hop from place to place. Although the original hotel closed its doors, Charlotte's current hotel boom is breathing 21st-century life into the location, which has been a plot of greenspace since the Stonewall's closing. By the end of 2017, the Grand Bohemian, a 254-room luxury hotel, is slated to break ground. Like Grand Bohemian properties in Asheville, Savannah and Charleston, this hotel will have an art gallery and a bistro. Plans also include a hotel bar, a rooftop bar, a spa, meeting rooms and a ballroom. RETRO CHARLOTTE by Abby Blanton the A 254-room Grand Bohemian will stand where this historic hotel once stood CHARLOT TESGOTALOT.COM 35
