1 Charlotte INNOVATIVE WORKS Chelsea Dumas and Josh Hall perform Sasha Janes' "Hallelujah." ART SMART by Arden McLaughlin Ballet 1 Get ready to jeté into the holiday season with the Charlotte Ballet's "Nutcracker," which kicks off on Dec. 8 with a special preview party—fittingly named "Night at the Nutcracker"— then runs from Dec. 9 to 23. Born out of the vibrant late-1800s Russian dance scene, "Nutcracker" tells the story of young Clara, whose precious Christmas gift comes to life. Here in Charlotte, choreography by Jean- Pierre Bonnefoux and music from the Charlotte Symphony tell the time- honored tale. Enjoy the production with your family at the Belk Theater in Uptown. Once thoroughly entrenched in the arts, let the Charlotte Ballet dance you into the New Year. From Jan. 26 to Feb. 17, "Innovative Works," one of the ballet's most popular performances, showcases contemporary ballet in an intimate setting: the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance, located at 701 N. Tryon St. Audience and artist come together in the 200-seat theater to experience ballet in unique and compelling pieces during the series. Guests will enjoy new ballets from Sasha Janes, called "a choreographer to watch" by The Washington Post; Myles Thatcher, known for his eye- catching and dynamic choreography; and Robyn Mineko Wiliams, a three- time Princess Grace choreography award winner. Tickets to "Innovative Works" include a dessert reception with the dancers and artistic staff. Charlotte Ballet is a Charlotte- based, world class repertory dance ensemble. The company performs classic, contemporary and cutting- edge dance with virtuosity, energy and artistic excellence for local, statewide and national audiences. 32 WINTER 2018
