Charlotte Country Club Tucked inside the charming Plaza Midwood neighborhood are the pristine, green-covered grounds of Charlotte Country Club, a golfi ng haven. The club's history runs deep, and its story is complicated. Plaza Midwood wasn't its original location, and Charlotte Country Club wasn't its original name. In fact, when the club opened in 1910, golf wasn't even its main draw. Charlotte Country Club opened under the initial moniker The Mecklenburg Club. In 1917, it took on the present Charlotte Country Club name. It was nestled west of the city, adjacent to Stewart Creek. And without the expansive golf course it boasts today, members of the time mostly indulged in games of cards, fi shing and boating, and picnicking. In the club's infancy, golf was still a burgeoning sport in the United States. In the year the club's doors opened, there wasn't a golf course within 50 miles of the Charlotte-metro area. This 1913 picture captures the club's original nine holes; the back nine weren't completed until 1915. As interest in golf grew—and Charlotte's population boomed— Charlotte Country Club expanded in tandem, moving to its Plaza Midwood location in 1931. Both the course and the grounds have been renovated over the years, and the club remains one of the state's most prestigious.
