A TALE of two cities

SINK YOUR FINGERS
INTO THE MORNING
SOIL WITH
TREESCHARLOTTE
With equal parts care and
precision, your hands tightly
pack the loose, cool mulch.
Its roots feel steady enough,
so you back away to let
Charlotte's newest tree stand
on its own. Paying no mind
to the dirt that speckles your
timeworn T-shirt, you lead
the crowd in a round of high-
fives and welcome the latest
addition to the neighborhood.
It's a warm Saturday
morning, and your neighbors
have joined forces with
TreesCharlotte to bring more
trees into your development.
With the help of volunteers
across the city, TreesCharlotte
is revitalizing our treasured
urban forest. The organization
prepares seeds and plants
and spreads the word about
proper tree care. The ultimate
mission? Planting 15,000 new
trees each year and achieving
50 percent tree canopy in
Charlotte by 2050.
After admiring the sturdy
new sapling, you strip your
gardening gloves and wipe
your brow, exposing your
newly discovered green
thumb.
