LOCALLY MADE by Allison Hancin 2935 Providence Road Charlotte, NC 28211 704.323.8178 For the Dietz and Ciordia families, chocolate is a family affair. After spending summers in the kitchen of his grandparents' bakery, Bill Dietz worked as a pastry chef—until a passion inspired a new direction. The Dietz family started making chocolate as an undercover hobby out of rented kitchens. Soon enough, truffles by "The Secret Chocolatier" starting popping up at Charlotte-area farmers markets. As demand grew, so did the need for a space of their own. In 2011, a family vote set the plan for a brick-and-mortar store in motion. The name stuck, and today Bill Dietz, his wife, Karen, daughter Robin, son-in-law Andy Ciordia, and grandson Logan run the South Charlotte storefront that bustles with sweet-toothed customers. Boasting awards and a national reach, it's safe to say The Secret Chocolatier is a secret no longer. The family finds inspiration everywhere, from locally sourced herbs to customers' curious palates. At the farmers market, a regular suggested they make a cardamom truffle, and the sea salt chocolate butter toffee was Andy's creation. Inspiration also comes from so-called "tasty accidents." When caramel came out of toffee kettle slightly too soft, the team poured it into dark chocolate shells, topped it with peanuts and the best-selling peanut caramel cups were born. With dozens of delectable treats, each with its own story to tell, a visit to The Secret Chocolatier is a chance to indulge in life's simple pleasures: family, friends and a little chocolate.
