SHOP SMALL by Allison Hancin In 2011, interior designer Sarah Baucom texted friend Carrie Barker, "You know what...I want to own my own boutique." Barker, who was working as an architect, offered to design her logo and site. The old middle school classmates never imagined this would be the beginning of their own women- centered retail movement. Three years later, under the name Pink Social, Baucom and Barker started designing and selling playful graphic T-shirts to sell at pop-ups and local boutiques. Their brand, which focuses solely on female makers and designers, eventually morphed into Girl Tribe Co., a company that's a retail shop, shopping experience, design firm and girl power movement all in one. In 2017, Girl Tribe put down roots with a storefront in South End. The pink paradise brims with apparel, handcrafted jewelry and colorful decor items sourced from local and women-owned businesses. You can also head online to find the Girl Tribe line of game-day gear, tees and popular CLT hats. For the ultimate girls day out, shop a Girl Tribe Pop-Up. These weekend- long events invite women-led boutiques and businesses to become part of the "tribe" while shoppers browse and enjoy classes and live demonstrations. And when small businesses need a fresh look or brides-to-be want a custom feel for their wedding, Pink Toast Ink saves the day with design and branding services. Just in time for gifting season, look out for a December pop-up shop in Charlotte. Can't wait? Stop by their South End storefront on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24. Girl Tribe 20 NOVEMBER 2018
