PARTING shot By Duke Stewart The next time you take off, take advantage of these completely free comforts at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. For starters, the tree-lined atrium is adorned with more than 100 cozy rocking chairs (a nod to the city's friendly front porch heritage) that'll help you kick back and relax before heading to your boarding gate. This touch of hospitality is not the only way that Charlotte Douglas is working to welcome travelers. For parents, the upper atrium's Mothers Room features private stalls, which are each equipped with a rocking chair of their own. Additionally, as many as three times each month, furry volunteers known as the CLT Canine Crew come to greet and lift the spirits of hurried and exhausted Southern hospitality at Charlotte Douglas International Airport passengers. The members of this welcoming pup patrol always crave a good scratch behind the ears. If you need a hint, they arrive wearing "Pet me" signs. Another fun perk to experience before takeoff is the ever-expanding "Just Plane Art" program funded by Charlotte's Public Art Ordinance. Throughout the airport, visitors waiting in line for a latte or a delayed flight can admire various public art pieces that add perspective and a sense of place. In true Southern style, the airport continues to churn out new experiences for passengers—whether locals or visitors—giving us all a reason to show up a little earlier for our next flight or even make a full stop in lieu of a layover. 74 JUNE 2017
