ALL PHOTOS BY KYO H NAM PHOTOGRAPHY We personally believe that few things go better with a warm June evening than a crisp, refreshing beverage. Thankfully, our friends at GoodRoad Ciderworks agree wholeheartedly. In fact, GoodRoad started with the idea that Charlotte needed something new and different. Opting not to run an ordinary cidery, owner and operator Brian Beauchemin (who has been brewing ciders for years), saw an untapped market and set out to open one of Charlotte's premier cideries. Serving a unique dry cider and a sweet mead (a wine made from fermented honey), GoodRoad brings a refreshing selection to Charlotte's happy hour circuit. The cidery's atmosphere is something to be admired, too. Situated between Tryon Street and Old Pineville Road, GoodRoad is part of the Lower South End neighborhood gaining new allure at every turn. Inside, a rustic juxtaposition of reclaimed barn wood and clean stainless steel makes for a main taproom that's warm and inviting. And with simple décor, it's reminiscent of Beauchemin's childhood in Vermont. A vintage apple cider press and cider that comes poured in mason jars adds to the rustic charm that has given this spot such character and appeal. Behind the scenes, the work never stops. Take a peek into the production area, and you'll find 11 stainless steel tankards ranging in size to accommodate anywhere from 500 to 2,000 gallons of cider each. Beauchemin aims to craft 14,000 gallons in his first year of operation. GoodRoad also has plans for bottling its ciders and meads and is currently kegging everything for the tap room. Soon, distribution will offer six-pack bottles of the signature cider and cork-and-cage bottles of specialty and seasonal brews. There isn't a full-service kitchen on-site at the moment, but GoodRoad will soon offer tapas-style plates. This summer, patrons can enjoy Wednesday night trivia and take advantage of the outdoor patio. Of course, cornhole is always a crowd-pleaser.
