PLAY date By Allison Hancin WITH A LITTLE BIT OF IMAGINATION AND A LOT OF ADVENTURE, EMBARK ON THIS PERFECT FAMILY-FRIENDLY PLAY DATE. Perhaps your little explorer has already conquered sea creatures and crawling critters. But how about the spellbinding galaxies beyond? Astronauts-in-training get a front-row seat to the night sky at Discovery Place Nature's new digital planetarium. Daily shows take visitors on adventures to the moon, through far away constellations and all the way back to the Charlotte skyline. As trips to space tend to inspire, excited whispers quickly turn to silence while heads tilt back, jaws drop and eyes fill with wonder. Suddenly immersed in a scene they've only imagined, kids get lost in stories of the ancient skies and lively tales explaining how stars, planets and constellations got their names. Visitors can explore two types of shows at Discovery Place Nature Planetarium. The first features multimedia videos that transport viewers to a whole new world, where gravity is optional and exploring uncharted territory is encouraged. Here, you can take adventures in moon landings, space travel and solar phenomena and behold up close exactly how a telescope works. The second show variety hits a little closer to home. Seasonal star shows narrate a tour through the Charlotte sky through the four seasons. Kids learn how to use celestial guideposts to find their favorite constellations and other markers visible to the naked eye. Fascinated by the newfound knowledge that they don't have to board a rocket ship to view the beauty of the night sky, kids are eager to put their stargazing skills to good use. Don't be surprised if they drag you into the backyard for a lesson in astronomy during the next eclipse or meteor shower.
